RHYMING POETRY: Comments from our contest judge

If no prizes are given in this category, it does not mean that our contestants have failed. It just means that they need to do a great deal of learning about this difficult discipline of writing. The first lesson is craftsmanship — to work carefully with words and phrases to fit the rules. Yes, there are rules:

  1. Aim at regular rhythm. Just because two lines have an equal amount of syllables, this does not mean that they fit the same pattern.

a. I thought I saw a pussy cat

b. Twinkle, twinkle, little starlet

The first line is in iambic meter; the second in trochaic meter. Confused? Learn to scan your work until it comes automatically.

  1. Learn to love our language. Use it with respect. Using a thesaurus is important, for it will give new meaning to familiar phrases. For example, look up blue and green and see the synonyms for each.
  2. Use strong verbs: lumbered, plodded, galloped, rather than run.
  3. Read, and read, and read poetry by authors as widely varied as Tennyson, Kipling, or Dennis Lee. The first can be lofty; the second, vigorous; and the third, humorous; but all have carefully put their work together.
  4. Learn to use metaphors, similes, internal rhyme, alliteration, etc. to make your work vivid and realistic. Your reader must be able to relate to your work.
  5. Don’t give up, but keep trying. Share your work with friends and family, and your writing will improve day by day.
